AmeriCorps is a National Service program where members receive a living allowance and education award for one year of service.
AmeriCorps, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, started in 1993 as a bi-partisan movement of Congress.
The benefits are two-fold: enabling communities to address assets and needs, while giving American citizens the chance to give back and earn an education award.
Muskegon's AmeriCorps team serves at various schools and after-school programs throughout the county to:
*implement service-learning projects in the curriculum and after-school programs *tutor youth *act as a liaison between community based organizations and the site they serve *organize need-based community service projects on national service days
Another branch of AmeriCorps at Volunteer Muskegon is VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). Vistas main goal is to alleviate poverty in the communities they serve. Vistas are considered a 'domestic' PeaceCorps. They create and partner with local government agencies, non-profits and citizens to address poverty head on.
